The ‘Physical AI Global Alliance’, involving major industry, academic, research and government organizations from Korea and abroad, will officially launch on the 29th.
The alliance aims to secure global leadership in Physical AI.
The seven co-chairs include the ministers of the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups; National Assembly members Jeong Dong-yeong (Democratic Party of Korea) and Choi Hyeong-du (People Power Party); the chair of the Korea Artificial Intelligence Software Industry Association; and the chair of the Korea Automobile and Mobility Association.
Hyundai Motor Company, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, LG AI Research and other leading Physical AI demand-side and supply-side companies, universities and research institutes will participate in the alliance as a collaborative platform for industry, academia, research and government.
The Physical AI Global Alliance consists of a total of 10 divisions: five ecosystem divisions (△Technology △Solutions △Governance △Talent △Global Cooperation) and five domain divisions (△ADV (AI Defined Vehicle) △Fully Autonomous Robots △Key Industries △ACR (AI Computing Resource) △Wellness Tech). The National IT Industry Promotion Agency will serve as the alliance secretariat and support its operations.
The five ecosystem divisions, led by Im Woo-hyeong, head of LG AI Research (technology division chair); Kim Yu-won, CEO of NAVER Cloud (solutions division chair); Min Gi-sik, CEO of SK Shieldus (governance division chair); Lee Kwang-hyung, president of KAIST (talent division chair); and Yoon Jeong-won, CEO of AWS Korea (global cooperation division chair), will develop public-private cooperation models, strategies for responding to international standardization and policy directions to gain an advantage in the global competition for technological supremacy in Physical AI.
The five domain divisions comprise Lee Dong-seok, CEO of Hyundai Motor Company (ADV division chair); Kim Min-pyo, CEO of Doosan Robotics (fully autonomous robots division chair); Lee Sang-gyun, CEO of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (key industries division chair); Hwang Hee, CEO of Kakao Healthcare (wellness tech division chair); and Baek Jun-ho, CEO of FuriosaAI, and Park Sung-hyun, CEO of Rebellions (co-chairs of the ACR division). They will discuss measures to promote the on-site use of Physical AI technology development suited to Korea’s industrial characteristics, as well as difficulties faced in the field.
In addition to the approximately 250 companies and organizations that attended the event, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to open participation in the alliance to domestic and international companies and organizations involved in Physical AI that wish to join, and expand its scale by the end of the year.
The alliance plans to collaborate with the 'Manufacturing AX Alliance', which was launched in early September, by linking the sharing of the alliance's operational achievements and communication between Physical AI demand and supply companies through the Industrial AX and Ecosystem Subcommittee of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee, chaired by the President.
Lim Moon-young, Vice Chair of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee, said, "As the national AI strategy control tower, the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee has selected Physical AI as a key strategic task and will spare no policy support to enable the Republic of Korea to secure a leading position in the global market."
Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon emphasized, "Securing global leadership in Physical AI is important to achieving the goal of becoming one of the world's three leading AI powers. We will pool the capabilities of the government, including the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, to build the Physical AI ecosystem together with companies and universities, and actively support its expansion into the world."
