AI industry ‘game changer’ Clevi develops ultra-large generative AI platform ‘Ivy’
Clevi Co., Ltd. (Clevi) announced that it would begin the open beta service for its ultra-large generative AI 'Ivy', independently developed using LLM (large language model) technology.
The company has officially launched its proprietary ultra-large generative AI model 'Ivy', developed using LLM (large language model) technology. As a high-performance, low-cost model, Ivy delivers outstanding effectiveness and performance, with reasoning, specialised agent capabilities and a high instruction-following rate. Until now, South Korea had not achieved notable results in the AI market amid the dominance of OpenAI in the United States and DeepSeek in China. However, with the official launch of the ultra-large generative AI 'Ivy' by domestic startup Clevi, South Korea has demonstrated that it can also develop AI using its own technological capabilities.
Ivy offers powerful features including △real-time learning and adaptation △multi-data processing △code interpreter △expert model creation and △agent support system, enabling it to be used across a wide range of fields, from individual users to enterprises.
CEO Lee Hwan-ho had been interested in AI and continued research and development even before founding the company in 2022. Despite limited financial resources after establishing the company, he successfully developed its own model over a period of more than two years, starting with pre-training through an efficiently designed training pipeline. According to the company, the model development cost was approximately KRW 1.5 billion, while the average monthly operating cost is around KRW 10 million. This is expected to provide a breakthrough in resolving the AI cost challenges that enterprises are facing.
CEO Lee Hwan-ho emphasises that the ‘Ivy’ model’s high efficiency and performance can address the issue often cited as a drawback of generative AI: “PoC is easy, but completion is not.” This enables companies to reduce labour costs and improve productivity by having AI perform repetitive and inefficient tasks. To minimise AI development costs, CLEVI has introduced innovative technology that efficiently manages the development process by applying automated, container-based training node deployment technology. Its significant cost reductions achieved through efficient training pipeline design and optimisation of communication networks between nodes are also noteworthy.
The ‘Ivy’ model is characterised by the development of a Mixture of models for efficient model training and operation. It was developed by creating small models, then distilling and combining these models into a larger model. It also incorporates attention and layer expansion for model combination, along with routing improvements to develop efficient models. Its support for not only English and Korean but also various languages worldwide through multilingual training and embedding optimisation is another notable feature.
As Open AI in the United States and DeepSeek in China compete to advance their AI capabilities, Korea’s large-scale generative AI model ‘Ivy’ is attracting industry attention by recording higher scores than the two existing models in various benchmark tests (△AIME 2024: 81% △MATH-500: 98.6 △SWE-BENCH: 51.1 △MMLU: 91.2).
In addition, amid growing concerns about personal information leaks and security as the use of AI Assistants expands, CLEVI has made the Ivy app available with registration requiring only minimal personal information. For public institutions and companies, it supports on-premises installation tailored to the user environment, receiving recognition for resolving security concerns.
